Munich

We spent a week in Munich, mostly visiting family. We did manage to see a few of the sights…and take a pile of pictures. We hope to come back and see more!

Oktoberfest starts on September 16th. They’re busy building what looks like a whole small town in Theresienwiese:

We were surprised to learn that Oktoberfest is more than just beer (and maybe some pretzels and sausage). It’s an entire fair, amusement rides and all.

There’s an international auto expo in town, along with the plenty of tourists, so the most famous sites were bustling. We are obviously not far enough into the off season for our liking.

The famous glockenspiel on the town hall (which we never heard play)

The views from the Alter Peter, the tower on St. Peter’s church near Marienplatz, gives great views of the city…after you climb 300 stairs.

Olympia Tower in the Olympic Park
Münchner Dom aka Frauenkirche (the Munich Cathedral)
If you squint, you can see the Alps in the distance through the haze

The inside of the church also has great views..

The Munich Cathedral is super tall, making room for even more stained glass.

Other sights from around the city:

The Chinese tower in the English Gardens – with beer garden, of course

Also in the English Gardens… surfing! A standing wave in the Eisbach (Ice Brook) attracts many surfers and even more onlookers.

Sunbathing along the Isar River… and water bathing, too, for those who can stand the cold
The Endless Stair
Ilse the snail – and her garden

Munich has an awesome local chain of bakeries named Rischart. Some people apparently would rather eat an American export. Sigh.
