Near Spello

The view was ever-changing from our terrace above Spello. Sometimes the clouds poured over the nearby the mountains, or drifted below us in the valley, or completely filled the valley… and a few times we were inside the clouds. Very cool!

It was hard to tear ourselves away from the comfort and the views, but fortunately guests arrived to liven us up. A hiking path along an old Roman aqueduct took us through olive groves, woods, and fields with great views when the trees thinned out.

A simple water fountain – slow down the flow from the spout and water shoots up from a hole in the top of the pipe

Quotes from people as varied as Einstein, da Vinci, and Groucho Marx were embedded in the aqueduct’s wall. Above: “Man spends the first of his life ruining his health and the second half trying to cure it” (da Vinci) and “I find television very educational. Every time someone turns it on I go in another room and read a book” (Marx)

Olive trees are impressively tough. We saw many with mangled trunks that were still growing abundantly. L checked out a few olives to see how oily they feel. Not that oily actually, but the majority had worms in them… leading me to wonder how much worm juice we’re consuming with our extra-virgin olive oil (ick!).
