An Engineer’s Dream

Munich’s Deutsches Museum is a fantastic science and technology museum. We spent a few hours there and only saw a fraction of their excellent exhibits. We could easily devote several days to it. Detailed explanations were given in both German and English.

A fabulously detailed model railroad – which was unfortunately being carefully vacuumed the whole time we were there

The detailed dioramas about bridge building were even more impressive.

Definitely no OSHA back then – they’re climbing on the wheel to make it turn
This is a model, not a picture!

If you just want to look at vehicles, there’s th free BMW World (and a BMW museum, which we didn’t visit).

Out and about in the city, the public transition network was equally impressive. We’ve never seen such a well-connected system, with closely-spaced stops in the city and out to the suburbs. A ticket for unlimited rides on the U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (local trains), tram, and busses cost only 20.20€ (about $22) for a week – what a bargain! The U-Bahn was just a block from our apartment and the trains ran every 4-8 minutes. German engineering (and public infrastructure) at its finest!
